Audiences witness the aging of actors in film and TV. From the 1960s to the 2010s, an actor’s “body image” has been the aspect of his person most powerfully imprinted on the public. By projecting his or her own personal experience of aging into the bodies of characters, he or she has evoked an essential quality of the film medium, of which the material is reality?dependent on the human transition. Despite a running time of under three hours, the film, Boyhood embodies the proposition that Clint Eastwood has developed over several decades?that human beings can never overcome time. The contemporary film medium is usually regarded as a (post) temporal medium it which it is easy to fabricate realities and visualize a world of fragmented memories and dreams. Nevertheless, films also function as a medium for preserving linear history, addressing the subject of what it means to be human.
