Men with intellectual disabilities tend not to engage in regular physical activity and relatively less physical fitness than ordinary men. Meanwhile, numerous studies showed the effectiveness of the elastic band exercise, but limited studies examined whether similar positive effects of training occur in men with intellectual disabilities. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the elastic band exercise in men with intellectual disabilities. Fourteen subjects were randomly assigned to either an experimental group(EG, 28.42 ± 5.96 years) or a control group(CG, 30.14 ± 4.98 years), with seven subjects in each group. The EG performed 75 minutes exercise with the elastic bands three times a week for 10 weeks. The band exercise program organized into two sessions depended on the intensity of exercise. During week 1 through 5, participants performed 50-60% of their maximal heart rate, and then increased the intensity to 60-70% by the end of the exercise program. The CG did not engage in a specific exercise program and maintained their daily life. To investigate the effectiveness of the exercise program, physical fitness(cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, flexibility, hand grip strength, pinch ability), hand dexterity, cortisol level.
The results showed that 10 weeks of the elastic band exercise significantly enhanced physical fitness(cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance : p〈.01, flexibility, hand grip strength, pinch abilit y: p〈.001) and hand dexterity(p〈.001),and the improvements were all significant better than those of the CG(p〈.05). Especially, physical fitness and hand dexterity greatly were more improved as the program progressed. The results showed a more significant improvement in the 6-10 weeks period than over the first 5 weeks. However, the cortisol level slightly increased(pre-test : 9.85 ± 3.12 ug/dl, after 5 weeks : 10.87 ± 3.12 ug/dl, post-test : 10.99 ± 3.79 ug/dl), but had no statistically significant effect(p 〉.05).
This study demonstrated that 10 weeks of the elastic band exercise program elicits significant improvements in physical fitness and hand dexterity in men with intellectual disabilities. However, the program was not an effective intervention for cortisol levels.
