This study compared the works of Kwon Jeong-saeng and Nagasaki Gennosuke, which had the period under the Japanese rule as their historical background, in order to see how the two writers configured the members of the other nation.
In ‘Mr. Kong’ and ‘Sad Sabot’, Kwon Jeong-saeng focused on friendship between Korean common people in Japan and Japanese common people. ‘Mr. Kong’ describes friendship between a Korean cleaning worker and a Japanese couple. ‘Sad Sabot’ tells realistically similar pains experienced by Korean and Japanese children growing in the same village during the late stage of the Second World War. Hunger and death are universal experiences that disregard differences among peoples. Through his memory of playing together with children in tough situations, the writer exhibits the possibility of friendship among common people transcending national differences. At the same time, he does not overlook conflicts between the two people by describing the feeling of distance hanging among the adults.
In ‘The Goat of the Cripple’ and ‘Pipe of the pigeon’, Nagasaki Gennosuke depicts Koreans who, as colonial people, became Japanese soldiers. A characteristic of this work is that it tells their psychology from Japanese’s eyes. They became a solider for substantial assimilation to Japanese yet they suffer from discriminations. At the same time, the writer emphasizes friendship and solidarity among people who belonged to socially alienated classes in those days. Through this, he raises a question on the identity of diasporas such as Koreans in Japan.
Both of the two writers point out that national confrontation is meaningless to children and poor people, who are the biggest victims of the war. In addition to that, they emphasizes the necessity of communication and solidarity among common people.
