As China's economic reform is changing every aspect of the country, so is the mass media sector. China has seen an unprecedented rise in the number of commercial newspapers, and advertising has become a major revenue source for the Chinese media since the early 1990s. Media commercialization has provided an incentive and opportunity for journalists to cover lively stories with diverse topics, and expose political corruption, government inefficiency and social injustice (Lin, 2003). In this vein, many Chinese journalists hold investigative reporting, a muckraking genre of journalism that was introduced into China in the early 1990s, in high respect, and show desire for and passion in practicing it. Against this backdrop, we shall explore the reality of the pres freedom in China and Chinese journalists' understanding of the investigative journalism by doing a case study of the Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolitan Daily ("Nanfang Dushi Bao," thereafter SMD), one of the most successful commercial newspapers in China with its reputation for the muckraking journalism.
