This article is an attempt to seek and to revive the lost legacy of Lillias Horton Underwood and to illuminate her thought and work in a neutral way. In contrast to her huge achievements she has not been properly studied by Korean Christianity or in international research. This article aims to re-evaluate her legacy from three points of view: Christian thought, Women and Gender and Healing Ministry. Even while dedicating herself to the life of a the missionary’s wife and “helpmate” of Horace Grant Underwood and as a care-giver for her family, she excelled as an independent lay expert in the area of theological and feminist awareness, and last but not least, as a medical doctor for healthcare. The author investigates in this article the thought of Lillias Horton Underwood primarily through her major books and articles in the Korean Mission Field. Her letters and reports may offer other subjects for further research but are beyond the scope of this paper.
Horton Underwood was inspired by conservative theology, but she showed an open mind toward society and Korean culture. She demonstrated an inclusive ecumenical spirit especially in her work as an editor of publications. Secondly she had a high level of consciousness about women’s needs and applied it to Korean women as well as to her foreign female missionary colleagues. Thirdly she treated patients, not only from the upper class, but also lower class ordinary people with the compassion and love of Jesus Christ.
This lays the ground for further research; for example analyzing her works in comparison with other female missionaries and wives of missionaries, illuminating her medical mission in cooperation of other contemporaries, etc. Furthermore exploring certain collaborations between the indigenous Korean women and American female missionaries might be worthy of international attention.
