Adenoviruses appear to have a core composed of single molecule of DNA, and a common complement fixing structural virus antigen. Adenoviruses infection in man produce acute pharyngitis, tracheobronchitis, bronchopneumonia or conjunctivitis. Several members of this group, including types commonly associated with respiratory disease in man, are capable of producing malignant tumors in young hamster and a few types have been shown to be oncogenic in young rat. Previous reports involving production and release of adenoviruses and its antigen have been carried out. The present report represents a continuation of previous study. To obtain evidence concerning the relationship between productive infection and non-productive infection, investigation of adenoviruses type 12(abbreviated as ad12) of this group was undertaken. For practical consideration it was disirable to investigate of growth characteristics and its antigen induction in HeLa cells(Permissive cells) and L cells(non-permissive cells). Results were as follows. 1) Infectious titers of Ad 12 in L cells were very lower than that in HeLa cells. 2) Hemagglutinin titers of Ad 12 in L cells were lower than that in HeLa cells. 3) T antigen was detected prior to the formation of viral antigen in HeLa cells infected with Ad 12. 4) T antigen was formed prior to the formation of infectious virus in HeLa cells infected with Ad 12.
