In April of the first year of the accession(B.C.140) of Wudi(武帝), fire occurred at the royal tomb-palace of the Gaozu(高祖)’s tomb in the capital area. Subsequently in June, the royal local-shrine in Liaodong(遼東) was on fire. Dong Zhong-Shu interpreted those two fires as follows; the royal local-shrine of Gaozu should not be built in Liaodong, and the royal tomb-palace should also not be built on the Gaozu’s tomb. Hence the heaven burned to redress an injustice, which was not allowed to build. It implied a warning of the heaven to remove not only the arrogance and luxury of the feudal lords but also the flattery and corruption of the courtiers.
At that time, royal ancestral rites were held 17000 times annually at a lot of royal local-shrines and tomb-palaces. Emperor was the holder of the highest political power and the final responsibility on reforming political society. Emperor’s power was based on Heaven’s will. Hence emperor should do such duty that served the Heaven as his father and followed the laws and rules of the Heaven. Performing ancestral rites, as a modest fruit given 4 times every year by the heaven, was also to obey the Heaven’s will. The removal at once of not only ancestral rites filled with empty formalities and vanity but also royal local-shrines all over the country was also dependent on emperor’s decision. In conclusion, the reinterpretation of Dong Zhong-Shu on the fires may be considered aiming at Wudi.
