Kantian Deontology and Utilitarianism, which represent the modern moral philosophy, focus on the problem of ‘what we ought to do’ or ‘what is right to do’ and ignore the notion of virtue. Unlike modern moral philosopher, we can find the main source of inspiration of modern virtue ethics in Hume’s moral theory. We will see this in Hume’s Treatise Book 2, Part I. sec. VII and Part Ⅲ, Sec. Ⅲ.
Hume’s virtue theory has the following features: 1) it is characteristic of an agent-centered concepts for moral evaluation; 2) it puts emphasis on an action caused by emotion; 3) it takes a rightness of action as a rather flexible one. In order to explore the aspects of virtue ethics in Hume’s moral philosophy, I shall consider whether akrasia is problematic in Hume’s discussion of motivation. I shall then argue that for Hume we can find the possibility of the inverse-akrasia. If the inverse-akrasia is possible in Hume’s motivation theory, I shall argue that virtue is better than rules and principles, concerning practicality and decision making.
