Looking into the character of genre, Preparation for death of Erasmus is based on Catholic dogmas. This piece is a religious manual to teach believers how to die well according to Catholic doctrines like these: Salvation of a man is decided at the moment of his death, and after it his soul goes to one of three places: Paradise, Purgatory or Hell. In his latter years after his separation from Martin Luther, Erasmus wrote this work and in it expressed his desire to return to the Catholic Church. Consequentially this book shows firm Catholic stances which we can not find in his early works. This piece belongs to the genre of ‘ars moriendi, the art of dying well’, published on a large scale, in the Counter-Reformation period that was triggered from the Council of Trent. The works of this genre made amazing publishing in the 17th century in Spain, introducing the decisions of the Council and propagating the Counter-Reformation’s ideals. By writing a book of this representative genre of the Counter-Reformation, Erasmus manifested his own religious identity as a Catholic priest. Nevertheless, all of his reformative ideas did not disappear in this piece, but rather he sought compromise and harmony between the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation like the Renaissance esthetics. As a humanist of the modern era, he rejected both extremes on the basis of the ideals of the Renaissance and sought equilibrium and harmony between the two tendencies. Sticking to the Catholic traditions in the religious position, he also expressed some reformative criticism about the ethical corruption and superstitious elements of the Medieval Church. To Erasmus it is better to use the neutral term ‘Catholic Reformation’, rather than the extreme term Reformation or Counter-Reformation.
