Most existing projection-based augmented reality techniques have focused only on improving the system performance such as accuracy and high-speed processing. They did not mention about effective human-system interaction which might be more important factor in users’ viewpoint. In this paper, we propose an intelligent projection system that is based on projection-based augmented reality techniques and is focused on providing effective human-system interaction. The system consists of a projector that projects complementary pattern images alternatively, a planar screen with IR marker on it, and two cameras: an “IR camera” for detecting IR marker on the screen and a “visible camera” for getting information of a projected image. By using IR marker and a complementary pattern images, our system excels and overcomes the problems raised from previous researches. First, it is user-friendly. Our system “hides” awkward geometric correction processes from the user and thus one can be more immersed into the system. Second, the proposed system can be applied to screens that changes dynamically because it performs geometric correction and AR display at the same lime, and independently processed in visible range and infrared range respectively. Lastly the performance of suggested system is reliable since it is marker-based method that “hides” the marker to the user only. The proposed system can be expanded and further developed as “intelligent multimedia display device.” The effectiveness of this method will be demonstrated from experimental results.
