This report desires to seek the meaning of the founder of shaman and simbang(shaman) through the sign function of ‘Sammengdu’(Sinkal-sword, Yoryeong-bell, Sanpan-three vessels) which is important for Jeju island’s simbang, and reveals the cultural contexts creating such a meaning in and around myths and rituals(Gut). The origin of ‘Sammengdu’ is came from〈Cho-gong bonpuri〉which shows the beginning of Jeju island’s founder of shaman. ‘Sammengdu’ has various functions of sign like icon, index, symbol in myth texts and rituals(Gut). In the rituals, the myth texts are recited. Therefore, I desire to consult the myths, ritual contexts, and religious-cultural contexts of Jeju island’s shamanism fully to understand the meaning of ‘Sammengdu’ precisely.
‘Sammengdu’ symbolizes the founder of shaman and also do the descendant Jeju island’s simbang. Some signs refer some objects and leave the interpretants to the mind of interpreter who recognizes the objects. And then the interpretants, becoming another signs, cause infinite semiosis. The interpretant theory in Peirce semiotics implies that a sign not only refer an object in the world directly, but also becomes a mechanism creating a single cultural unit. So ‘Sammengdu’ which is useful for Jeju island’s rituals and is considered as important for Jeju island’s simbang, becomes a sign causing various cognition in the specific cultural contexts, and becomes a single cultural icon in itself. From such a premise, I think that the meaning of ‘Sammengdu’ is based on the founder of shaman and simbang, and I will reveal that ‘Sammengdu’ is recognized as based on the sacred of contagious magic and homeopathic magic in the culture of the myths, rituals(Gut) and simbang.
