This study aims to examine the true nature and historical value of Five Tombs (5reung) which are known as tombs for progenitor king of Silla in Gyeongju, royal capital. It means new approach to the problem of the progenitor of Silla.
In the archaeological context, it is difficult to think that present Five Tombs were made as tombs for progenitor king in the early period of Silla, although it was recorded in Samguksagi (Official History of Three Kingdoms) and Samgungnyusa (Tale of Three Kingdoms). We can see the style of wooden chamber tomb with stone mound in Five Tombs. Because of this style, I think that the earliest constructing time of Five Tombs can be the time of Maripgan. However, it is difficult to think that Five Tombs relating to progenitor were constructed in the region which was not related to the legend of progenitor. It is necessary to make new approach to the historicity of Five Tombs.
In this study, I think that Five Tombs were related to Aryeong, the queen of progenitor king. Hyeok-geo-se, the progenitor king of Silla was not recognized as progenitor in the time of Saroguk, the matrix of Silla. In the time of Saroguk, Aryeong was recognized as progenitor. However, Hyeok-geo-se was made as the progenitor of state in the nationwide level by the rise of the power of Kim clan and the development of Saroguk to be Silla combining to neighboring Jinhan powers. Therefore, the place for the commemoration of progenitor could be organized to be the tomb area for progenitor king. It was connected to the recognition that Hyeok-geo-se was progenitor of Silla and Five Tombs were known as the tombs for King Hyeok-geo-se.
