This research focuses on Christian initiation from the perspective of postcolonialism. The first part articulates the history of postcolonial interpretation and its contributions. It was raised in the area of literary criticism by renowned scholars such as Edward Said and Homi Bhabha. It asks who has the power to interpret text and/or tell stories to others. According to postcolonial theologians, contexts and traditions should be the texts of hermeneutics and theological reflection. Through “imaginative dialogue” and “liberating interdependence” one can effectively examine the social, cultural, and political environment that gave shape to the liturgy and life of Christians.
In this respect, in the second chapter, the writer of this article deals with not only the text, but also the context of the text of Christian Initiation. Christian baptism is a form of resistance and it is expressed as apophasis in the midst of oppression and injustice. Paul dreamed of, and indirectly proclaimed, a new world of peace and justice through the Christian Initiation.
Thirdly, Christian Baptism is a process of seeking hybridity and in-betweenness, appropriating such terms from Postcolonial studies. Paul speaks the truth to both the oppressor and the oppressed. In the “the Third Place,” the oppressor and the oppressed encounter, and all conflicts are resolved. The Christian initiation creates this new life where equality is accomplished between the Jew and the Greek, men and women, and the free and slaves. It is a life with an unrealistic but necessary vision which is possible by “one Spirit” through Christian initiation. According to the insights from Post-colonialism, all the baptized drink one Spirit with a new and the “third” identity in the Third Space.
The writer hopes that this research would provide a positive challenge to both traditional liturgical understanding and romantic idealism on baptism through postcolonial analysis. Christian initiation is not just a ritual of a community, but a sacrament which advocates radical resolution toward a new life in any context of injustice and inequality.
