Nehemiah uses the autobiographical form to justify himself and persuade his readers to give him credit. It readers accept without any value-judgements what he recounts, they may see him as a powerful leader working for the community; a pious man in his relationship to God, a social reformer to the Judaeans. However, if they stop allowing themselves to accept his story hut try to evaluate through their questions what he focuses on and what he excludes from that focus, the story can he read differently. For even in his own account which is conspicuously aimed at self-justification, Nehemiah has to he vulnerable to criticism; in a subtle ?ay his story justifies and sustains the foreign king s dominance. In fact, his story seems to he rather religious. and it is true that conventional readers have constructed theological ideas as the ideology of the text. Ironically. in terms of its ideological function, the text may be intended to be read apolitically. While readers read purely religiously, the text is served politically by the reality of social conflicts or grievances being hidden or by the possibility of rebellion being suppressed. While only Nehemiahis personal qualities and activities as the leader are focused on. the foreign kings dominance is taken for granted. Readerly questions confirm that political interests are served by the text which consists of religious contents.
