The aim of this study is to define a new role for the Korean pastor, a role grounded in the theoretical while active in the practical application of the pastor`s work. The title of pastor is one that implies the spiritual father of a congregation, one who cares for, guides, and leads the members in their daily walk with God. It is therefore a serious problem facing the church in Korea that pastors are viewed less as spiritual guides than as rigid, authoritative lecturers. The problem is exacerbated by the spiritually immature church culture that finds it difficult to mold a single congregation from a diverse population. Indeed, the church faces influences from the prevailing secular culture while trying to reach members of society ranging from the ultra-modern to the working class. Part of the difficulty in building a Korean church is that much of the reference work in proselytizing and pastor development comes from Western countries. While Western Christians are doing God`s work, we must remember Paul`s exhortation to "be all things to all people," and the Bible`s further guidance to Christians to gather or worship with like-minded people. Although the message of salvation is unchanged, the method of communicating that message to a given people must be locally adapted. Missionaries understand that people must have access to the basic necessities of life (for example, well water) before Christ`s teachings can be properly received. How should God`s unchanging message be communicated in Korea? How could we overcome the perception of pastor rigidity and the tendency to import a pre-fabricated model of church building? How can a church be created which speaks to people where they are, giving full consideration to their culture and traditions? The author proposes that we must first look at the pastors` concept of self-identity. Furthermore, seminary curricula must be renovated to enable theological graduates to overcome the authoritative attitude reminiscent of the Pharisees, and learn to tailor their message to their audience rather than simply imitate American ministry. Promotion of an open-minded approach ratherthan a dogmatic application of one model points toward ministry is an art, not a science. At the crux of this study are the concepts of the pastor as an artist and the reform of Korean church culture as a divinely - commissioned masterpiece. The study will first review the role of the pastor in church history. Next an alternative view of the pastor as artist will be proposed as a 21stcentury model. The discussion will include Biblical references to identify the inner characteristics of such a pastor. Finally, the paper will propose specific ideas to renovate theological education including an analysis of the effects of art education on divinity school students.
