The aim of this paper is to throw some light on the relation between the teachings of Bodhidharma in Jikji: The Essential Passages of the Buddhas and the Patriarchs Directly Pointing at the Essence of the Mind and the Early Buddhism. The dialogue between Emperor Wu of Liang Dynasty and Bodhidharma reflects the true merit lies in the purification of the mind in terms of Emptiness (Shunyata). One of Bodhidharma"s teaching methods is via negativa, which is found in an anecdote between Shakyamuni Buddha and Kitakossami who lost her infant. Bodhidharma"s Wallgazing[壁觀] is a meditation method leading to enlightenment. As opposed to the Buddha"s teaching of a gradual, step-wise enlightenment, Wall-gazing advocates away of sudden enlightenment. This is a sinification of Early Buddhism which advocates gradual enlightenment. Wall-gazing, epitomized as "Stop the conditions externally and mentally, have no panting internally, and keep the mind as a wall, then you can enter the Way.", is close to the practice of meditation (right effort 〈Samm? V?y?ma〉, right mindfulness 〈Samm? Sati〉, right concentration 〈Samm? Sam?dhi〉, but there is no mention about "right view 〈Samm? Di??hi〉 or Wisdom. This might lead the Zen practitioners into a wrong destination other than Enlightenment. Bodhidharma"s Transmission of Dharma to Huik"o seems contradictory to the essence of Zen Buddhism because it smacks of adherence to form rather than content. This is quite different from the last sayings of Shakyamuni Buddha before his final passing away: "All compounded things are subject to vanish. Strive with earnestness!" For modern people who suffer from dukkha (suffering) are advised to practice Bodhidharma"s Wall-gazing first. If they find that Wall-gazing does not fit their needs, they are strongly advised to practice Satipatt?na (Four Foundations of Mindfulness, 四念處).
