Kim Tae-Jun(金台俊, 1905~1949) was the most prominent leftist cultural activist in late Colonial period and post-liberation period. His contributions, e.g. the first full-scale writing on the history of sino-Korean literature and other compilations of that filed, were often accepted as the effect of his socialistic value and anti-Japanese attitude. But all things of his life considered, It is such a controversial issue.
This thesis regarded his works on the history of Korean literature as an outcome of the competition with other distinguished scholars in chosun-hak area. At that time, old nationalistic scholars, such as Ch?ng Inbo(鄭寅普), took the initiative in forming anti-colonialism against Japanese scholars. After studying at Keijo Imperial University[京城帝國大學], the stronghold of the colonial view of history, Kim Tae-Jun became a faithful follower of positivist approach involving anti-traditionalism as well as a longhaired socialist. Kim’s Works and his competitors’ ones were in intertextuality. Kim’s priority of taking achievement in chosun-hak area made the Korean nationalistic scholars press on their way.
Kim Tae-Jun’s self-contradiction between progressive belief and obedient life were resolved in 1940’s. Kim Tae-Jun joined an secret ultra-leftist organization, Gyeongseong Communist Group led by Park Heon-Yeong. After that, as we know, He was the prominent leftist cultural activist during 10 years. Especially, this thesis investigated his leftist confucian organization, Jeon-guk Yugyo Yeonmaeng(全國儒敎聯盟). Kim’s attitude on confucianism was originally hostile. After becoming leftist organizer, he matured enough to think strategically. Kim Tae-Jun knew that confucian value and practices would be an important resource in order to mobilize the younger generation in a revolutionary protests against traditional rightist confucianists supporting Kim Goo.
After considering all the facts above-mentioned, this thesis reached this conclusion: Although his academic legacy on chosun-hak remains controversial issues, the latter part of his life should be considered to be a great consistency in his Marxist ideology.
