This article investigates the annual cyclical rites of Korean protestant church by conducting a case study on a church in a rural area of Choong-Chung Province. The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics and meaning of the Annual Cyclical Rites of Korean Protestant church. The annual cyclical rites of A-Gok presbyterian church, which is located in A-Gok Ri, A-Gok Myun, Bo-Eun Gun, Choong-Chung Book Do, represents a harmony of traditional church seasons observed by world churches and Korean traditional annual cyclical rites.
This phenomenon shows the comprehensiveness and dynamics of Korean Protestant church’s annual cyclical rites. Annual cyclical rites of Korean Protestant church reflect conception of traditional Korean folklore.
Western missionaries propagated Christianity to Korea. However, the culture and annual cyclical rites of Korean church are quite different from those of western churches including American churches.
Annual cyclical rites of Korean church are strongly community-oriented in various aspect. This seems to be the result of Korean community’s characteristic collectivism.
