In this study, I examine the causal relationship between population characteristics and crime in city, county, and district in Korea. Specifically, I try to find out how population size, density, growth, movement, and area size affect on violent crime per 100,000 people. I conduct a regression analysis using population characteristics and area size as independent variables, and crime as a dependent variable.
In the first step, I use total 232 city, county, and district data and get a following finding. First, population density, population movement have a positive causal relationship with the violent crime per 100,000 people. Second, area size has a negative causal relationship with the violent crime per 100,000 people.
In the second step, I categorize 232 city, county, and district into three groups according to population size, density, movement, growth, and area size. The findings of the second step are as follows. First, population size, only when it is less than 100,000, has a positive casual relationship with the violent crime per 100,000 people. Second, population density, only when it is less than 4,000 people/km2, has a positive casual relationship with the violent crime per 100,000 people. Third, area size, only when it is less than 600km2, has a negative causal relationship with the violent crime per 100,000 people. Fourth, in terms of population growth, stagnation is more vulnerable to violent crime than growth or reduction, although it isn’t statistically significant.
In terms of population size and density, small and medium size cities may be more vulnerable to violent crime than big cities or metropolitan cities. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare urban planning and police measures to deal with population size, density, and area size in terms of violent crimes.
