Owing to its locational advantage neighboring to China, a few Korean firms have benefited from China’s rapid economic growth. In particular, Korean firms play as part suppliers for Chinese assembly factories. Korean firms’ subsidiaries are mostly founded as either greenfield investments or joint ventures. We explore a few strategic roles of the Korean subsidiaries for eliciting some useful strategic implications of Korean firms’ outward FDIs to China. For this purpose, we particularly collect Korean parents with more than one million dollar investment in their Chinese subsidiaries. As a result, more than one hudrend parents are included. We attempt to analyze three important issues using pooling least squares dummy variable regressions. First, it is surprising to see that subsidiary size is not proportional to parent size. This is because small-sized parents have limited resources compared to large-sized parents. Second, Korean parents do not necessarily head to special economic zone in China, which means that their Chinese direct investments are not simply intended to take advantage of the institutional benefits of special economic zone, much differently from a conventional wisdom. Third, Chinese subsidiaries are not likely to be designed to focus on labor intensive productions. Actually, R&D intensive production is a driver of Korean firms’s direct investment to China.
