Recently, as many local governments have paid more attention to the social and economic value of their distinctive cultural resources, there is a growing interest in indigenous cultural resources with which, as a content for tourism, to raise their competitiveness and to add value to the community. Especially, since the concept of Dark Tourism has appeared, there have been many attempts to approach negatively considered elements in different perspectives. In this respect of Dark Tourism , this study examines new possibilities of exile culture. It is aimed at seeking a storytelling way which utilizes the story of the exiled by applying Dark Tourism which creates positive value from gloomy history to exile culture.
Through the self-conquest story of the exiled, it produces positive values and distinguishes the narrative structure of exile culture into time of routine, time of exile, and time of recovery, and explains the process of routine - severance - conquest - restoration - recovery. It analyzes the strategy of exile culture storytelling as an example of Jeju’s Chusa exile road which was the major exile place in the Josun dynasty. Also, it presents a storytelling way of exile culture to the switch of negative image about exile culture, the systematic approach about the story of exile people, the utilization of growth story with positive changes, and the healing stage for comfort in change of the inside. Through this process of exile culture storytelling, people can think outside the box and consider exiling as a process of curing lives not a punishment.
This study signifies that it opens up possibilities that apply to new tourism resources by presenting the positive aspects of exile culture which have negative images. In this sense, a variety of approaches can be tried in various culture industries to utilize exile culture.
