This paper aims to comprehend the current status and problems of teaching Yangbanjeon in middle schools by examining Korean textbooks. The conclusion is as belows;
Yangbanjeon is contained in nine among total sixteen Korean textbooks. Three of them are contained as a main material, two as a supplementary material, and one in appendix.
Learning objectives of Yangbanjeon chapters are focused on the writer’s attitude and expression method of satire. Viewed in the nature of the work, the setting of these objectives holds validity. Learning activities of the chapters have achieved connectivity with the objectives to some extent. But some of the textbooks contain considerable faults such as lack of link between learning objectives and learning activities.
To improve the instruction of old Korean novels in middle schools, there is a need for integrated approach in which the components of work are viewed as a whole. Yangbanjeon is the most appropriate work for this integrated approach in middle schools, considering the nature of the work, attitude of the writer, the timing the work is introduced to students. Therefore Yangbanjeon chapter must perform a role to fulfill the integrated learning of achievement standards beyond merely attaining a particular objective.
