This thesis focused on the importance of cultural unification before political unification and searched new direction of study on classic novels which can be the base of cultural unification. This thesis reflected on the nationalism as a discourse of Korean unification, the point of contact of studies in South and North Korea, and the plan of co-prosperous unification of studies on classic novels.
Firstly, this thesis raised necessity of arrangement of term-confusions surrounding the object of our study and proposed that we should call it not ‘old novel’ but ‘classic novel’ refer to the achievement of studies in North Korea. Furthermore in the point of the system of study, some elitist method of study of South Korea is to be modified a little bit considering North Korea’s study focusing on the public. Secondly, more active and systematic discussions are possible related to the starting point of classic novels on the recent achievements of study. The recent studies in South and North Korea are attending to Choi Chi-won and Ondaljeon to make earlier the starting point of classic novels differently formerly discussion regarding Geumoshinhwa as the beginning of classic novel. Thirdly refer to the achievements of studies in South Korea showing opening posture and admitting the classic novel’s value of the middle ages, it is necessary to amend North Korea’s tendency of study showing closing posture and defiant nationalism and denying the classic novel’s value of the middle ages and intended to modern times.
These discussions for the co-prosperous unification of the studies on classic novels in South and North Korea should be developed more delicately and deeply. And interchange between scholars on classic novels of South and North Korea should be promoted and joint establishment of data in South and North Korea is necessary urgently.
