The purpose of this study is to understand how the visional visual experience of the audience changes depending on shooting conditions and viewing environments of 3D film. To achieve this purpose, this study produced stereoscopic stimuli with different shooting conditions and investigated whether there wereare changes in the visual experience of the audience while watching the stimuli.
The shooting conditions in producing stereoscopic stimuli were divided into the following 3 categories: focal length, object distance, convergence distance, and inter-axial distance and lighting condition; and total 12 experimental stimuli were produced according to combinations of the respective factor.
Experiment participants were sampled group that is the main movie-going public participated.
Distinctive from studies that focused on technical and engineering analysis that fell short in on the contextual and perspective of the 3D film audience, This study stands apart in its empirical analysis on how the visual experience of audience differs depending on shooting condition and viewing environment.
In particular, this study is relevant in producing its results through experimental image which applied the film production standard in post-production processes such as
camera, equipment like lighting, and DI (Digital Intermediate) and performing the subjective evaluation after showing the experimental image in the theater for the recruited audience. And it also has a significance in its analysis on the difference in visual experience while the audience is watching the stimulus.
The analysis results of this study are not universally applicable in general conditions since they are produced on the basis of the experiment and the stereoscopic stimuli that were produced in the limited conditions. However, they can be a guidance that helps a production and showing. Continued discussions should be held to supply the demand of high quality 3D film and the improvement of the visual experience for the advancement of the 3D film industry.
