The purpose of this study was to describe in-depth the factors affecting the occupational socialization of sport instructors. To achieve this purpose, the qualitative study was conducted for 10 swimming instructors who work at a public sports facility located in Seoul. Data collected through in-depth interview, participant observation and document materials were analyzed using Spradley`s(1980) cultural analysis method. During data collection and analysis, data were continuously ascertained for reliability, validity and ethics. As a result of this study, the following findings were obtained: Factors affecting occupational socialization are the factors which instructors perceive as having an effect on their occupational socialization. These factors include the environmental factor, the social perception factor, workplace factor, futurity factor, and economic factor. The environmental factor concerns the surrounding environmental changes affecting the instructor. The environmental change and the type of sports facilities vary according to these environmental factors. The social perception factor concerns the general public`s perception of swimming instructors. The social perception is more negative than positive. The workplace factor consists of factors which instructors perceive to influence their occupational socialization within the workplace. These workplace factors include human relations, managers` perception, fellow instructors` job consciousness, and specialization of job. The futurity factor concerns the future prospects of the occupation. Instructors are concerned with the prosperity of their facility, little opportunity for advancement, and physical limitation in carrying out their jobs. The economic factor concerns swimming instructors` perceptions of their pay, which they perceive to be relatively low. The above mentioned factors interdependently influence the process of instructor`s occupational socialization.
