The purpose of this study is to fond out the differences in the pedagogical content knowledge of the novice and experienced swimming instructors in teaching crawl. For this analysis, 4 instructors(2 novice instructors, 2 experienced instructors) working a at swimming pool in Seoul were selected, The multiple case study design was adopted for the study. Data were gathred by in-depth interview. videotaping, and document analysis. In analyzing the selected data, firstly data were structwed according to the lower rank pedagogical knowledge such as knowledge on purpose, curriculum knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and knowledge on students. Secondly, the differences between the novice instructors the experienced instructors were idustified through repeating the process which extracted the generalized type from the respective types of the instructors by constant comparative method, And I applied member check, peer debriefing, and triangulation were used to guarantee the trustworthiness of data analysis. The results were as follows : 1. As for the knowledge of pedagogical purpose, the experienced instructors suggested the optimum level according to the harmony of whole motion and the level of students, but the novice instructor set unreasonable purpose because they had a excessive passion about their students and focused on skills only. 2. As for the knowledge of curriculum, the novice instructors and the experienced instructor showed no differences in organizing, but in explanation and feedback there were some differences between them. The experienced instructors suggested various and definite ways but the novice instructors suggested the fixed explanation and unexplicit feedback to students. 3. As for the knowledge on students, the experienced instructors used the terms which are suitable to the personal characteristic and the understandability of students, but the novice instructors understood students only their present level of physical ability and used technical terms regardless their understandability. 4. As for pedagogical knowledge, the novice instructors and the experienced instructors showed similarity when they taught and appraised students. But the experienced instructors suggested various related exercises and kept aloof from using assistant implements, when the novice instructors suggested simple exercises and frequently used assistant implements. In conclusion, through continuous and various instructing experiences the experienced instructor had more pedagogical content knowledge than the novice instructors in teaching crawl. But in actual practice of teaching crawl they showed little explicit differences.
