This paper aims to compare and analyze Saul Bellow’s first two novels in terms of modern people’s victimized consciousness and overcoming it. Joseph in Dangling Man creates his ideal construction of reality which he can live by. However, it is not appropriate for his circumstances, and he falls into idealistic fabrication and finally gives up his utopian hope. Therefore, Joseph’s return to society is faint and his self-recognition and social awareness still remains imperfect. In The Victim, Asa Levethal realizes an individual awareness and social responsibility for others through two problems of his sick nephew and an anti-Semite Kirby Allbee. At the first time he rejects any responsibility for Mickey’s sickness and Kirby’s plight, but gradually he gets to realize that he should be responsible for them. He recognizes his victimization as an inevitable phenomenon of life and realizes a moral joint responsibility of life. Consequently, Asa Leventhal seems to accept himself and others more positively than Joseph after suffering.
