The purpose of this paper is to analyze the discourses about “Overcoming modernity” presented by philosopher Keiji Nishitani of the Kyoto School and Yojuro Yasuda of the Japanese Romantic School in the 1930s and 1940s.
“Overcoming modernity” is a term with several layers of meaning. Originally, it was the title of a 1942 roundtable discussion known as “Overcoming Modernity,” sponsored by the literary magazine, Bungakukai. Takeuchi Yoshimi"s 1959 essay also bears the same title and it was largely associated with “overcoming modernity” construed as an icon of Fascism propaganda.
This paper focuses on reexamining “overcoming modernity” and it sheds light on the binary opposition of ideas as “modernity vs. tradition” “irreversible progress vs. eternal now.” The Kyoto School and the Japanese Romantic School intended to establish a new historical narrative as an alternative to the catastrophe of the modern, which was implemented through the pursuit of regression and a traditional worldview called “politics of time.” In Nishitani and Yasuda"s view, the past and tradition are understood to last forever. The present is not merely a one-directional continuity of different moments, but is the “Eternal Now.” The specific representation of anti-modern time is tenno, an emperor of Japan. The idea of tenno, symbolized as the imperial eternal line, is a “dispositif” contrary to the irreversible time of the modern.
In this paper, I prove that “Overcoming modernity” to restore tenno is a thesis about the “politics of time,” alleged by the new epistemological transition to modernity.
