This paper addresses the viability of wh-island effects in long-distance scrambling of a wh-phrase in Korean in terms of Korean native speakers’ real-time acceptability judgment. In order to measure the effect of the wh-island constraint, test sentences were constructed in four conditions, which varied according to (a) whether a wh-phrase is scrambled out of an embedded clause or placed in situ and (b) whether the interrogative scope is the embedded clause or the main clause. Sixty-four Korean adult native speakers were asked to read the sentences in a self-paced reading task and to judge their acceptability. The analysis of their acceptability judgment, sentence comprehension, and processing time revealed that long-distance wh-scrambling in general resulted in serious degradedness in well-formedness, as well as reduced accuracy in comprehension. However, no significant difference was found between the scramblings from an interrogative clause and those from a declarative clause, indicating that Korean wh-scrambling is not subject to wh-island effects.
