Hahn, Hye-ryeong. 2015. Scrambling Out of a Wh-Island: Types and Acceptability. The Journal of Studies in Language 31.1. 157-177. This study compares long-distance scrambling of elements out of wh-islands in Korean with those out of non-wh-islands, in terms of native speakers’ acceptability judgments. A wh-island was narrowly defined as an interrogative CP whose specifier position is occupied by a wh-phrase. A total of 95 Korean adult native speakers participated in a timed grammaticality judgment test, and were asked to rate the acceptability of various sentences with a wh- or an NP extraction from embedded wh-clauses. The analysis of their judgments revealed that Korean native speakers tended to reject sentences with a long-distance scrambling from a wh-clause, irrespective of whether or not the interrogative clause constituted a wh-island. The findings demonstrate that sentences are seriously degraded by constituent extractions from a clause containing a wh-phrase and, on the other, that the degradedness is not attributable to wh-island effects.
