The social functions of folk dance are what thc$gt; social class of common people, with the object of removing dissatis faction. secures the mutual sense of common bon ls, achieves the cotmnon objective, feels the enjoyuxent, and expresses the artistic nature unaffectedly h,e removing the comfliot between the nobility and the common people and adclicvg the effect of shamanic religion within the society. Tehe social furtetions of korean folk djnce and western folk dance are arrangeeg as follows. feorcean folk dance is in its expression contents, same atmmed aucl satirical, and Uumorous jnrl funny nvile expressing wo-eIl humble living emotion of thc: comnum people class bec,tusc of mntcmcnme by v-hick et can express an individual`s fum eetE.anporary and freely esith the trinite,oi unsatisfied desire, fm and taste atnl without strict forue for emotional expressieea. ecc orclingly, they danced thorn selves to get rid of stresses arol tried to get a new life forew getting cmt of the conflict between classes. Therefore korean folk dance can be said to he a elnnce that began to germinate from customs of times and seasons of mass comnoon people as a spontaneous genesis, adhered closely and connectected ro the civil baseel un charm religion, have rooted deep in the living em ironment s and spiritual lives of the mass civil people, and have groee n and developed for a long time. And what can bc-e regarded as a typical characteristics of korean folk dance is that it cornsists mainly of folk dances of gregarious dance style centering around women lay the influence of contucius thought than to have a nature of couple dance lay man and woman. And also it has a characteristics that can show an individual`s elegance centering around the beauty of the upper body line rather than the dances centering around the lower body. However observine the western folk dances, ee a can see that they can engoy themselves as one body without discriminating academic backgnounol or the rich and poor or position and business in gob t:,lace. And since the motions of the folk dances are so composed as to make wcnnen look beautiful they become a big power to sweep away the old thought of the predominance of tnan over woman and further to heigten the culture of the equal rights for rnan and woman. Or in a party, a-ith people even whose face they had not seen before first they can make human relations in ,e short time through folk dances. so, though their lingustic ability is poor and particulary in conversation they feel inconvenient even in English, however. if they are able to dance with my people pleasantly not only in the Lnited states and Britain but also in from Scandinaeria to Balcan peninsula and from Canada to Argentina, they can underskand each other though they cannot communicate by language. Today understanding and revaluating the folk dance does not come to an end with new rece gnition of our things as a part of grasping the living patterns of us who are living today, but by grafting the etxestern folk dance which is realized by cooperation, social intercourse and the sense of common bonds with the excellent folk dance in our country in which indiriclual originality is allowed and thus personality is displayed continuing the pulse of tradition and crtstom, by developing new folk dances that can accomlish cooperariorr with imeidual personalities between the members of the collective body and actively spreading them playing a role of a stage where the sense of the common bonds between social ccnnmunities are formed, the pulses of tradition are understood and personalities are displayed.
