The intent of this study is to present the concept and the typing structure of folk dance based on review of related materials, to prepare for publication of the Korean Folk Art Dictionary. In fact, it is not easy work to classify folk dance as the intangible cultural heritage in an academical manner. The concept of folk dance is differently presented in each material and folk dance is typed simply in terms of fragmentary or unclear criteria. Nevertheless, I was able to discover common core terminology reflected on researchers" views over folk dance and its key features by era, and dealt with the concept of folk dance based on such discovery. Namely, you can say that folk dance means the art of basic culture, originated from instinctive behavior and developed throughout history and geographical territory. Folk dance had not been enjoyed only by a specific class. Anyone can be a enjoyer who sometimes turns out to be a performer. Folk dance has been inherited as "group dance playing together" performed at all open places such as hills, fields and prairies as far as such places are related with seasonal customs or rituals. And nowadays, folk dance itself serves as "solo dance for showing" which has evolved into professional entertainment togetherwith transition of time. Therefore, the category of the typing system is expanded into "solo dance for showing" of today from "group dance playing together". Tying criteria is performer, enjoyer, purpose, function, space and music. The dance is largely classified into "court dance" and "folk dance". In middle scale classification, the dance is divided into non-professional entertainment and professional entertainment, based on a style and a core element. Again, non-professional entertainment can be subdivided into a local event considering regionality and the dance in each chapter or by tool used in a locakl event. Professional entertainment is subdivided into the dance based on its line such as geisha culture, acrobatic tumbler culture, court dance culture or shamanism culture by figuring out interchange of dance among a court, the folk and a geisha academy in the late Chosun. I hope this essay could serve as the solid foundation in defining titles for folk dance and exemplary methodology for publishing a dictionary.
