The has been much effort to seek the identity of modern Physical Education. It has been recognized that there were some problems in Physical Education area. The purpose of this study was to explore some possibilities of Physical Education as Somatic Education in order to solve these problems. Somatic Education is based on the perspective of the soma Soma is defined as me, the bodily being or the body as self. In order to make sensible and valid choices concerning the somatic dimensions in Physical Education, it was necessary to examine the following concerns: The concern of philosophy with the notion of soma, physical educators` recognition of the bodily experience in movement, the articulation of the concept of the soma, and somatic experiences with the Physical Education curricular. The movement of existentialism and phenomenology has led the way into perceiving and experiencing the body as subject through the concept of being-in-the-world. Education in general and Physical Education in particular have recognized the existence of soma, the body as subject, as an integral aspect of humanity. The field of Physical Education has been changing in order to provide for richer experiences in the somatic dimensions. The eastern epistemology is based on intuition rather than analysis. Therefore, the human and the world are considered from the organic or unified view. `Body and mind are the same` is a widely accepted thought in the eastern mind. In relation to the New Science, the west has accepted the eastern intuition. Somatics is perceived as a new perspective in the field of Physical Education. Somatics, studying the soma, could solve the problems in the superficial studies of Physical Education which were the characteristics of western criterion. It will also provide the possibility os Physical Education as Somatic Education that is related to human movement and life itself.
