The humanities and all arts are a proper noun. It is because they establish their own world instead of imitating logic or the world of others. The world of the proper noun becomes possible due to the existence of a humanistic spirit that presents to oneself and the world with ‘frankness and honesty’. Based on the viewpoint that Rha Hyeseok had the virtue of frankness and honesty, the study sought to identify her humanistic spirit - what makes her is now - by examining her challenge and response until she established her own feministic criticism. The process until her own establishment of humanistic spirit is not easy to be revealed unless it is linked with thoughts and practice of the Suwon Rha family and her parents, brothers and sisters, that is, her family’s traditions. At the same time, we must consider that it was the outcome of her distinctive sense to interpret new thoughts by herself while accommodating them. Her setting off on a journey around the world via Seoul and Tokyo for new education might be related with practicalism prevailing in her hometown of Suwon. She sought to identify truth through experience based on empirical tradition and wholly demonstrated her acceptance of challenge and response to absurdities of the prevailing mainstream society by accommodating and reinterpreting criticism of women"s liberation. Though it has been a century since her humanistic spirit implemented principally through frankness and honesty began, we call her a pioneer because we are not able to come even close to her humanistic spirit. Her feministic criticism was generated step by step: She encountered modern thoughts during her study in Japan; she found feminity through a marriage; She met new and diverse people during her trip to Europe. She became entirely isolated from the society’s establishment by formation and practice of her thoughts of feministic criticism, which evolved from ‘becoming a human being’to ‘finding of discrimination’ and further to ‘finding of differences’. She never ceased to challenge the male-dominated Joseon society, though. Only her humanistic spirit may explain the ‘incidents’ which made it difficult for people to understand her and at the same time get rid of any misunderstanding arising from there. She lived her own and only life without imitating others based on her humanistic spirit of frankness and honesty. This article is written in honor of Rha Hyeseok’s greatness and proper noun as such.

인문학과 모든 예술은 고유명사라고 한다. 다른 사람의 논리나 세계를 모방하는 것이 아니라 그 자신만의 독자적인 세계를 이룩하기 때문이다. 고유명사의 세계는 “솔직함과 정직함”으로 자신과 세계에 맞서는 인문정신이 있기에 가능하다. 본고는 솔직함과 정직함이라는 덕목은 곧 나혜석의 것이었다는 점에서 나혜석의 여성비평이 성립되기까지 그 도전과 응전을 살펴 나혜석의 오늘을 있게 한 인문정신을 규명해보고자 쓰였다. 나혜석의 인문정신이 형성되기까지는 수원 나주나씨와 나혜석의 부모형제들의 사상과 실천, 즉 가문의 전통과 떼어서 생각하기 어렵다. 동시에 신사상을 수용하되 자기화 하려는 나혜석의 뚜렷한 주체의식이 낳은 결과였음도 고려해야 한다. 나혜석이 신교육을 위해 서울과 도쿄를 거쳐 세계 일주에까지 나서는 것은 수원에 면면히 흐르는 실학정신과 무관하지 않다고 본다. 나혜석은 실사구시 정신으로 체험을 통해 진실을 확인하고자 하였고, 여성해방비평사상을 수용하고 자기화하여 공동체가 지키려는 부당한 중심을 향하여 도전하고 응전하는 실전을 온몸으로 보여주었다. 솔직함과 정직함이라는 인문정신의 핵심을 실천한 나혜석의 인문정신은 그로부터 1백여 년이 지났지만 아직도 그의 인문정신의 근처에도 다다르지 못한 우리는 그를 선각자라 부른다. 일본유학체험으로 근대사상과 만나고 결혼으로 여성을 발견하며 구미여행을 통해 새롭고 다양한 타자와 만나 나혜석의 여성비평사상은 한 단계씩 새롭게 생성된다. ‘사람 되기’에서 ‘차별의 발견’으로, 또한 ‘차이의 발견’으로 전개된 나혜석의 여성비평사상의 형성과 실천은 그로 하여금 고립무원의 처지에 빠지게 하였으나 남성중심의 조선사회에 대한 그의 도전은 그치지 않았다. 그동안 나혜석을 제대로 이해할 수 없게 한 ‘사건’들은 나혜석의 인문정신으로라야 설명이 가능하며 오해를 불식시킬 수 있다. 나혜석은 정직함과 솔직함의 인문정신으로 한 번 뿐인 자신의 삶을 타인의 흉내를 내지 않고 자신의 고유한 삶으로 살아냈다. 이글은 그러한 나혜석의 위대함과 고유명사를 위하여 쓰였다.
