This study aims to compare high school students" study attitudes and activities between Above Basic Levels (i.e., Advanced, Proficient, and Basic levels) and Below Basic Levels, based on the English section of the National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) scores. The following research questions were addressed. First, to what extent do study attitudes and activities and NAEA scores differ between Above Basic and Below Basic Levels for high school students? Second, what is the relationship between study attitudes and activities and NAEA scores, for Above Basic and Below Basic Levels? Third, what variables predict membership in the distinction between Above Basic and Below Basic Levels? The results indicated that all study attitudes and activities were significantly different between Above Basic and Below Basic Levels. In addition, for Below Basic Level high school students, ‘time spent on after-school classes’, ‘satisfaction with after-school classes’, and ‘satisfaction with EBS education broadcasts’ were positively correlated with NAEA scores, while ‘time spent on private tutoring’ was negatively correlated. The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that ‘time spent on after-school classes’ was the best predictor of membership in the distinction between Above Basic and Below Basic Levels. ‘Time spent on after-school classes’ can contribute to decreasing the number of Below Basic Level students, which in turn might have a positive effect on reducing the education gap.
