The purpose of this study is to investigate elementary school 6th grade students" perception of the environment through their concepts of environment and images about environmental scientists.
Firstly, as a result of carrying out an investigation on elementary school students" concepts of the environment, this study found out that the rate of their object-centered concept, through which they regard the environment as a single space or a space including living organisms or living organisms and humans altogether, was higher than the rate of their relation-centered concept, through which they interpret the environment in the aspect of interaction between the environment and humans. This fact is considered to imply that the environment education should advance toward a direction where an integrated and interrelated balance should be emphasized.
Secondly, as a result of carrying out an analysis of elementary school students" images about an environmental scientist, this study found out that they showed a low rate of drawing pictures of environmental scientists wearing a lab gown as a standard image because of their outdoor activities. A number of students drew pictures of environmental scientists carrying out research with experimental tools as a symbol of research, with a high rate of students drawing pictures of environmental scientists analyzing environmental pollutants and taking pictures of polluted areas with technical tools, such as a computer and a camera. As for the alternative image about environmental scientists, it was found that there was a higher rate of drawing pictures of female environmental scientists than a previous research on students" drawing pictures of other kinds of scientists, and there were lots of pictures they drew of young environmental scientists carrying out environment-related activities. As for the additional image about environmental scientists, the majority of students drew pictures of environmental scientists carrying out research activities with trees in the forest, followed by pictures about conducting environment-related research activities through observation and experimental measurement.
