In order to study the nutrition education need in middle school, we surveyed 180 middle school students in rural area. Seventy-five percent(important : 44.7%, more important : 30.1%) of male and eighty-seven percent(important : 42.9%, more important: 44.2%) of female students stated that nutrition education is necessary. The first reason for the nutrition education needs is ‘for health’(40%), and the second one is ‘for good diet habit’(36.7%). The most proper number of times of the education that the students wish is once a month(23.9%), the most proper length of time per class is 40-45 minutes(35.6%). The best means of education is cooking(63.9%), and the most interesting education method is cookery practice(59.4%). Male students(30.1%) are most interested in studying health, growth, and disease, on the other hand, female students(23.4%) are most interested in studying cookery basics and practice, which means that female students are more interested in cooking.
The most interesting contents of nutrition education books is nutrition for adolescence(33.4%), and the most difficult contents of nutrition education books is food group and food composition(23.3%). Many of students want the cooking class for nutrition education. The result of survey indicates that most students are not provided adequate nutrition education and teachers should focus on students’ preference. Nutrition education should be part of the school curriculum and in order to increase students’ satisfaction, cooking skills should be taught in nutrition education class.
