The mass immigration of Korean-Russians to Russia began after the collapse of USSR. They generally moved to the Russian Far East regions or the Central regions such as Moscow and St. Petersburg. In the mean time, Rostov, located in the southern part of Russia, became a Korean-Russians’ main residential area. Many Korean Russians steadily moved to Rostov because the southern region was relatively easy to transfer from Central Asia.
This paper has been prepared for the purpose of investigating the formation process and characteristics of Korean-Russian community, and analyzing the present problems of Korean-Russians and their community. It has been written on the basis of the personal materials, interviews and the survey.
It is possible to divide Korean-Russians’ community in Rostov by the previous residence and the immigration time. The community consists of Koreans from various regions such as Sakhalin, Siberian cites, nations like Central Asian countries, South and North Korea and China. While the old immigrants have certain social status and economic stability, the newcomers suffer severe financial hardship and have difficulty in acquiring Russian citizenship. Despite passive contact among these small groups, they maintain friendly relations and participate in the festivals and contests hosted by regional governments for about 100 ethnic minorities in this region. In spite of the loss of Korean language and traditional customs and high level of assimilation to Russian culture, they have their own ethnic identity as Koreans and great interests in Korean culture. Considering the fact that there are still lots of problems to be solved for them, more concerns and support from Korean government are needed.
