This article focuses on issues linked with the function and use of Russian as a national language of the Russian Federation. The work analyzes legal issues regarding the preservation of the Russian language as the language of the nation, the language policy of the State from the times of the Russian Empire to the modern state, including key federal laws dedicated to the language policy.Though constitutionally declared as Russia’s national language in 1993, the language functioned as the national language for the duration of the entire Russian history. Following perestroika and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the economic and political changes in Russia brought about many problems, including those in the Russian language. Even though the legal measures enacted by the Russian government reinforce the status of the language, much effort is required not only on the government’s part, but also from Russian native speakers. While measures need to be taken to boost the prestige of the language both in Russia and abroad, native speakers of Russian need to develop their own language skills in order to be able to use it skillfully. This issue requires continued research and cannot be resolved by legal measures alone.
