??This paper is to examine the connection between “Hapworth 16, 1924” and the Glass Family Series. “Hapworth” is a letter that seven-year old Seymour wrote home from Camp Simon Hapworth in Maine.
??The letter reveals that Seymour was an even more astonishing child prodigy and passionate God seeker than Buddy had told us in “Seymour: An Introduction.” We also find that Seymour was troubled by his sensuality, his emotional instability, and the malice he felt toward unspiritual people in the camp. Because of these flaws, Seymour ended up in two major fights, one with a counselor and the other with the camp director. These conflicts forced him to withdraw from the world of normal, unspiritual people, and this decision was a turning point in Seymour’s life, expressed by Seymour’s relationship with his bride, Muriel, in “Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters” and of his suicide in “A Perfect Day for Bananafish.”
??In addition, Seymour’s positive statements about Taoism and Vedanta Hinduism in “Hapworth” suggest that the religious underpinning of the Glass Family is in order. Therefore, we can understand “Hapworth” as the core of Salinger’s works.
