Rousseau’s thought was an ideological torch for the French Revolution, and it contributed greatly to the formation of the modern political order in the western world. It’s influence was not limited to the western world. It was accepted more rapidly and favorably than any other thought of the western philosophers by the East Asian states including China, Japan, and Korea, which sought after the new political order in the transitional period of the 19th century. One of the reasons for the earlier acceptance of Rousseau’s thought was that it represented the fundamental ideas of popular sovereignty and democracy which had motivated the French Revolution.
Nakae Chomin(1847-1901) in Japan and Liang Qichao(1873-1929) in China had played a great role in accepting and diffusing Rousseau’s thought in each country. They also exercised influence over Korea’s acceptance of Rousseau’s thought. In general, it could be said that Japanese influence was more dominant than Chinese influence. But the Korean path of accepting Rousseau’s thought was doomed to be distorted because his thought was not chosen autonomously by the Korean people but transmitted exogenously by the Japanese intellectuals.
The Korean history of accepting Rousseau’s thought can be divided into two periods: early period of acceptance(1897-1945) from the period of the reform movement to the Liberation, and later period of acceptance (1945-present) after the Liberation. After the Liberation, the Korean people had opportunities to choose the western thought and civilization from their own perspectives in contradistinction to the Japanese legacy of exogenous imposition. The Korean people had the period of massive translation(1945-1978) the apex of which was marked by the publishing of the collected works of Rousseau. Since 1980s, there have been increasing not only the Korean translations directly base on the French texts but also Korean studies on Rousseau. With the help of those works, nowadays we the Korean people can deal with Rousseau face to face with our own choice.
It has passed over one hundred years since Rousseau’s thought was introduced to Korea. Many aspects of our systems of politics, education, and culture has been built on the basis of his thought. I dare to say that it has already become our own. In this paper, I traced the path of how his thought have become our thought. It might be said that it is in our grip. I think this kind of study enables us to overcome the prejudice of the Western-centralism and to go beyond it in the near future.
