The purpose of this thesis is to study the appropriateness of using short stories in the high school classroom. Using literature in the classroom can be helpful for improving English reading comprehension skills. Students can enhance the cultural background and pick up contemporary expressions while reading short stories. Short stories have extensive cultural contents and vocabularies for students. The most important factor is that students can develop the affective domain which is the emotional side of human behavior. In this thesis, the teaching process is divided into three parts: the pre-reading stage, the while-reading stage and the post-reading stage. In each part, there are variety of activities that teachers can make use of.
