The purpose of this thesis is to examine the usefulness of short stories as English texts in high schools and present teaching methods of reading skills. Literary materials in English classes have three major advantages. First, it helps students to develop linguistic ability. Seconds, it helps students to understand another culture. Finally, it helps students to get some exemplary model for their own life through literary experience. Therefore, using literature in the classroom can be helpful for improving English reading comprehension skills. It can also provide an ideal basis for integrating the four skills through interaction.
As a consequence, this thesis attempts to present teaching plans including learner-centered activities. For this, the short story, “A Secret for Two” written by Quentin Reynolds, is used as the text. Various teaching methods are applied in making lesson plans for the short story according to three stages. The specific stages are the pre-reading stage, the while-reading stage, and the post-reading stage. In each part, various activities for the students are suggested. In conclusion, literary texts, especially short stories can be effective, authentic text for learners to develop four language skills and to understand culture. To maximize the effect of using literary texts, the teacher should continually make efforts to acquire more motivational literary materials, and develop appropriate teaching methods for these materials.
