Even though knowledge network concepts have been imbedded in the regional development policies, knowledge network per se in the regional dimension has been more or less abstractly treated, keeping a priori status. In contrast, this research focuses on Bio sector in Chungbuk Province, examining its structural characteristics and evolution mechanism. It depends on collegiate joint research projects in Chungbuk-based universities, applying social network analysis methods.
major findings are as follows: Firstly, external factors, not internal ones, have exerted significant impact on Chungbuk bio network. This study also reveals that the number of Seoul-based organizations is more than that of chungbuk. The same pattern is repeated in the regional dimension: Capital Areas outrun Chungcheong Areas in the aggregated number of participating organizations. Examining the annual trend, nonetheless, we can observe that the degree of interconnectedness among Chungbuk-based organizations has been rather increased, even though they have experienced ups-and downs.
Secondly, this study confirms that Chungbuk Bio industry has now passed the early stage of network formation and its growth is heralded by food and pharmacology sectors. It reflects the Point that higher degree centrality is confined to food and pharmacology sectors and industrial organization present higher degree centrality than research institutes.
Thirdly, Chungbuk bio network has been evolved by the richer-get-richer and poorer-get-poorer law. Its network hub, Chungbuk National University, occupies higher percentage among the total project volume. Represented with graph reflecting centrality priority of the participating organizations, it forms scaleless network based on the exponential principle.
Fourthly, the richer-get-richer and poorer-get-poorer law is different from the network growth principle. In order to converge two principles, network size and link should be more reactive as long as centrality becomes higher. In case of Chungbuk bio knowledge network. network size and link increases as centrality is lowered. This result implies that network would grow as the richer-get-richer and poorer-get-poorer law is lowered.
