This study examined mothers’ and teachers’ knowledge and beliefs on the purpose, the content, the method, and the evaluation of young children’s mathematics education and the difference of knowledge and beliefs of the two groups. 254 teachers and 116 mothers in kindergarten and day-care centers in Kyungbuk province and Daegu city were surveyed. The results of the study revealed the meaningful differences in the knowledge and beliefs of two groups on young children’s mathematics education. The teachers considered small group activity, free choice activity, teaching through plays, concrete material, relationship with peers and practice and drill as more important. In contrast, the mothers considered individual activity with teacher guide, game, teaching through plays. concrete materials, block, relationship with peers as more important. The results have some implication not only for mathematics teaching practices in formal setting but also for parent interaction with young children in their families.
