The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of Yongmoodo training on the mental health of teenagers. It"s specifically meant to investigate whether the gender of Yongmoodo trainees made any differences to their mental health, whether there was any gap in mental health between Yongmoodo trainees and non-trainees, and whether the training term of Yongmoodo trainees made any differences to their mental health.
The instrument used in this study was questionnaires prepared by using a multidimensional self-report symptom inventory. The subjects in this study were 140 Yongmoodo trainees and 60 non-trainees in Seoul, on whom a survey was conducted. After all the completed answer sheets were collected, just valid ones were encoded according to encoding guidelines.
For data handling, frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe"s multiple comparison method were employed, and the questionnaires used in the study turned out to be highly reliable, as Cronbach"s a value of the questionnaires was between .7049 and .8748. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, in terms of connections between the gender of the Yongmoodo trainees and their mental health, the Yongmoodo trainees were significantly different from each other according to their gender just in part of mental health, including somatization, obsession
Second, as for relations between the training term of the Yongmoodo trainees and their mental health, the Yongmoodo trainees varied significantly from one another according to training term in phobic anxiety.
Third, concerning gap in mental health between the trainees and non- trainees who were both boys, there was a significant gap between them in somatization and obsession. In the event of the girls, a significant difference existed between the trainees and non-trainees in somatization, depression and anxiety.
Yongmoodo training that could build up the will of trainees could be defined as a philosophically worthwhile activity to have teenagers, who are feeble-minded without establishing a philosophy of their own, lead a healthier life, and a sound body will ultimately be accompanied by a sound mind.
