This study examined the factors that precede buying firms’ time and resource investments in supplier development. Supplier development is any effort by a buying firm with a supplier to improve the supplier’s performance and capabilities and to meet the buying firm’s short and long term supply needs. The quality and cost of a product or service offered in the market is a function, not only of the capabilities of the firm, but also of the network of suppliers who provide inputs to the firm. When a firm finds its suppliers lacking in performance it can help suppliers to develop their capabilities. As firms increase knowledge transfer, it helps the supplier’s employees improve their skills and productivity. This increase in skill of the supplier will reflect in supplier’s improved performance.
There are two main goals for this study. The first goal is to investigate the relationship between knowledge transfer means and supplier’s performance improvement. The second goal is to explore the effects of knowledge complementariness. To analyze the validity of the research model and the hypotheses, the data are collected from 238 manufacturing firms through the administration of structured questionnaires. The results of regression analyses indicate that the model is generally valid and 4 of 4 hypotheses are supported by the data. Reasons for and implications of these observed relationships are discussed.
