At the heart of the Judaic is the struggle for liberation. Or, put another way, the struggle for liberation forms the heart of the Judaic. From the beginning this struggle has been contextual as exemplified in the history of the people Israel. Empowerment raises the bar of liberation to a new level. Recreating oppression, even, and especially, an oppression that benefits part of Israel at the expense of other parts of Israel and the stranger is worse than oppression suffered at the hands of enemies. Otherness in Israel, an otherness embodied by the impoverishment and abandonment of the widow and the orphan, is death for Israel. Is happening to the people Israel today especially as related to the policies if the state of Israel regarding the Palestinian people? Only the prophetic can address this behavior and perhaps reverse it. But where can that prophetic be found? Can it be found in the Torah when read out loud - in age of helicopter gunships? A Jewish theology of liberation seeks to address these questions, applying ancient understandings to the contemporary struggles of the Jewish people.
