This paper attempts to examine how the theme of Sabbath is used in the Scripture, particularly in the Old Testament, in order to explore its meaning and further investigate the way it gets to be fulfilled as the redemptive history develops. For this purpose, a number of particular texts in the Old Testament are studied. First, this paper examines Gen 2:1-3 where the meaning of Sabbath is given in the sense of completion of God"s intention for creation. Second, the meaning of the day of Sabbath is pursued in an examination of the fourth commandment (Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5), which aims at restoring the Sabbath as the completion of God"s intention for the created world in Genesis 1-2. It should be noted therefore that the day of Sabbath is not a perpetual but a temporary device that anticipates for the eschatological restoration of the Sabbath. Third, this paper attempts to connect the foregoing meaning of Sabbath and the day of Sabbth with the teachings of the New Testament, where the works of Jesus Christ provide eschatological fulfillment of the day of Sabbath. In particular, to keep the Lord"s day, the first day of the week, needs to be understood from the theological viewpoint of alreadybut not yet. Fourth, this paper brings up implications of Jesus" fulfillment of the day of Sabbath in the contemporary context of Korean church in the twenty first century. Both the legalistic attitude and the anti-legalisitc attitude in keeping the Lord"s day should be rejected, yet an attitude of attempting to restore the kingdom of God, in accordance of Jesus" completion of the Sabbath, needs to be maintained in every manner of Christian"s individual and communal life.
