Should the church have the neutral position about political issues? Should the state have the neutral position about religious issues? Since reformation the neutral theory on the relationship of church and state had prevailed. This neutral theory had been influenced especially by the Enlightenment. But this neutral theory is questionable. Although this neutral theory is good in terms of religious freedom, it is questionable in terms of Kingdom of God. God rules not only in the areas of soul and religion, but also in the areas of state and politics. The church should establish the justice of God, the peace of God and the joyful land of God on the earth. These Tasks have close relationships with the activities of state. Political theology was a very important turning point on the issue of church and state. It was a theology to reject the neutral position of church in the areas of state and politics. Political theologians wanted to establish the reign of God in the concrete political areas. Theology of Hope(J. Moltmann, 1964) and Theology for the World(J. B. Metz, 1968) were representative books of this new theological movement.
The church should proclaim the Word of God to the political areas. It has political responsibility in terms of Kingdom of God. The political responsibility of the church is a spiritual task of the church because the satan rules over political areas. We should take into consideration what the rule of A. Hitler meant. We should discover the satanic power of the rule of A. Hitler. Injustice, war, exploitation, discrimination and death are agents of the satan, who wants to destroy human beings and the world.
Is it a best way to establish the Kingdom of God on the earth, if the church gets the political power? Is it very good, if the Pope rules over the world? No! We should notice that the reign of God is different from that of the Pope. God should rule to establish the Kingdom of God. But the reign of God is not identical to the reign of the Pope. The Pope is not a political expert. The Pope should rule over the church because he is an expert of religious affairs. A political expert should have the responsibility of the reign of state. And it is important that he should rule over the state in the orientation of the light of the Kingdom of God.
Should the church establish a christian democratic party to establish the kingdom of God on the earth? No, especially in korean situation! It is very dangerous to establish a christian democratic party because Korea is a multireligious land. It may come to a religious conflict to organize a christian democratic party. It may destroy peace in Korea. Instead of organizing a christian democratic party, the church should send many christian politicians with ability to political areas to establish the Kingdom of God.
Has the church the right to resist the government? Of course the church should help the government and pray for the government, if the government fulfills its task in normal way. But the church should resist the government, if it becomes a satanic power clearly. The church should accept the sufferings in resisting the satanic power. The church should be ready to accept the sufferings because the Kingdom of God has conflict with the reign of this world.
